HPCIC's holds Annual Camp Rainbow

Hospice & Palliative Care of Iredell County’s (HPCIC) Rainbow Kidz program hosted its Annual Camp Rainbow June 12 – 16, for 60 Iredell County children.  Camp Rainbow is a week-long free summer camp for children that are experiencing grief and related issues from the death of a loved one.  Camp Rainbow offers a mix of fun activities, and structured creative curriculum to foster coping and healing.  Camp transforms typical camp activities into useful therapeutic experiences that address grief. The goal of camp is to help children honor their loved one and move forward through their grief.  Rainbow Kidz is the unique pediatric program of HPCIC.

Camp Rainbow exposed these children to alternative ways of coping, and reinforcing that learning to cope with loss is unique to each person’s journey in life.  Our hope is that exposing children to different ways to approach healing will widen their coping system.  Their backgrounds are diverse, but they are connected through a shared experience.

This year, 41 of the 60 campers have lost a parent or sibling, and as a result are experiencing major changes in their everyday lives. For example, a family of three children from South America tragically witnessed the murder of their grandmother. They are at camp to begin their process of healing after such a terrible loss. Another camper is with us for a second year as he embraces learning additional coping skills to help him through the loss of his older brother who died of a rare form of muscle cancer.
Activities during the 2017 camp included equine therapy, yoga, karate, therapeutic crafts, rock climbing, drumming circle and grief support groups. Camp Rainbow concluded Friday 6/16 with a special memorial service for campers and their families.  Families are invited to participate with their children in the service to memorialize their loved one.  A special adult bereavement session is help beforehand with the adult bereavement staff of HPCIC.

It is our hope that no child should grieve alone. If you are interested in learning more about our program or donating, please contact Leigh Ann Darty, LCSW, Director of Rainbow Kidz, at 704-873-4719 or leighannd@hoic.org.
